Press Statement: Global Campaign To #FightInequality

Good morning ladies and gentlemen,

I speak on behalf of the Ghana CSOs platform on the SDGs, specifically sub-platform 10 (SDG 10) which is dedicated to fighting all forms of inequality. The week of 18th -25th January 2020 is recognized annually by development practitioners across the globe as the Global Week of Action on Inequality (#FightInequality). The Fight Inequality Alliance is a network of civil society activists that is building a global movement to counter the excessive concentration of power and wealth in the hands of a small elite. We seek to achieve a just, equal and sustainable world.  The week long campaign is coming on the back of the World Economic Forum currently ongoing in Davos.

POSITION OF THE GHANA CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANISATIONS PLATFORM ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGs) ON THE GHANA BEYOND AID AGENDA

INTRODUCTION:
Several Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) gathered under the auspices of the Ghana CSOs
Platform on SDGs, after a 2 day (19-20 December 2019) intensive discussion on the Ghana
Beyond Aid Agenda (GBA) and its implications on civil society sustainability, decided to
formulate a comprehensive CSOs position on this all-important national agenda. Our position
espouses the view of stronger sustainability, collective development and long-term planning
that guarantees effective implementation of the noble agenda.

Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in the Kassena Nankana West (KNW) District in the Upper East Region, on Tuesday 19th November 2019 held an inception meeting and training session for CSOs working in that District for the formation of a District Platform of CSOs on SDGs.

PRESS STATEMENT: GHANA’S CONTINUED LEADERSHIP ON THE SDGs LAUDABLE BUT REQUIRES FURTHER STRENGTHENING TO ACCELERATE PROGRESS ON SDGs

The Government of Ghana has shown commitment and leadership on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Firstly, government has ensured that past and present national budgets (2019 and 2020) are aligned to the SDGs, and has produced annually SDG Budget Report, to allow for the tracking of budget allocations across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

High-Level Political Forum Exhibition showcasing innovations on SDGs from CSOs

The Ghana Civil Society Platform on SDGs participated at the 2019 High Level Political Forum in July. As part of the multi-stakeholder partnership with government, the CSOs Platform organized a joint exhibition with government to showcase innovations from Ghana on the SDGs at the HLPF. Consequently, a Three Member Committee was set by the Steering Committee members on May 17th 2019 to plan the exhibition as well as collate innovative ideas or initiatives from CSOs on the SDGs to be exhibited at the HLPF.

GLOBAL WEEK OF ACTION DAY 4: BEACH CLEAN-UP TO RAISE AWARENESS FOR GOAL 13 – CLIMATE ACTION

September 20th and 27th are key moments in the Global Week of Action on the SDGs were young advocates around the globe march on the streets to demand action to prevent further global warming and climate change. This day is used to draw attention to the detrimental impact of climate change and call on leaders to Act Now to save the planet!

GLOBAL WEEK OF ACTION DAY 3: MARKET WOMEN IN ASHAIMAN SENSITIZED ON THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

As part of the ongoing activities lined up for the Global Week of Action by the Ghana CSOs Platform on SDGs with support from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in Ghana, a Community Durbar was organized on September 26th, at the Ashaiman Market to sensitize market women on the SDGs.

In 2015 world leaders signed historic agreements – the Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Agreement, and the broader 2030 Agenda to push for a peaceful, just and sustainable world by 2030. These agenda come with a promise to transform our world, end poverty and hunger, reduce inequality, ensure peace and combat climate change; more importantly, to set us on a path of peace and prosperity in a healthy environment.
