As part of the ongoing activities lined up for the Global Week of Action by the Ghana CSOs Platform on SDGs with support from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in Ghana, a Community Durbar was organized on September 26th, at the Ashaiman Market to sensitize market women on the SDGs.
The Market women were educated on the 17 SDGs in the local languages (Twi, Ga, Ewe and Hausa). Women were engaged on why the SDGs are important for them, how they can hold their local authorities accountable to the achievement of the SDGs and what they can do to support in the achievement of the Goals. Some of the women noted that keeping the market clean is key in achieving SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) and 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), others highlighted the importance of SDG 4 (Quality Education) for their children.
A particular market woman asked the team how poverty can be eradicated noting that she has three children and all of them are in school. In response to this, the team members informed them about the social protection programmes that government has put in place which includes the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty Programme (LEAP)
Another group of market women encountered by the team indicated that they were happy to have been engaged on the SDGs because the market is always left dirty by the market women after each market day, but with the awareness creation and education they have received they will do their best to keep the market clean. They requested the team to appeal to the Municipal Authority to provide them with dustbins
While at the market, drivers at the Ashaiman station, upon seeing the team engaging the market women, requested to be educated on the goals. The lorry drivers showed some level of understanding of the goals and responded correctly to questions
Traders and drivers who responded to questions and contributed to the discussions received SDGs branded T-Shirts and Note Pads.
The Activities for the Global Week of Action continues tomorrow, Friday 27th, with a Clean-Up Exercise at Lavender Hill Beach. #StandTogetherNow
